Holocaust Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum

Here are some guidelines to help you to write a coherent and focused reflection within the given word-limit:

n
When writing this reflection you should, as with any assignment, progress through several stages involving different activities:

n
Research (in this case, your main research is your observations and note taking while on the visit)

n
Plan/outline of your report, then writing of the first draft (both of which you will have some time to do in our Week 11 seminar).

n
Revising and redrafting

n
There is no need to write descriptive information about the date of our visit or about the other external or internal areas of the Imperial War Museum.  Please do not waste words on such points: instead, get straight to your reflections on the Holocaust Exhibition.

n
Draw upon the notes your took on our visit in order to inform what you are writing.

n
Aim to strike a balance, as always, between description or narrative (i.e., what you saw) and analysis (i.e., why did you find what you saw significant, or effective – or not – in conveying the historical subject of the exhibition).

n
There will probably be a great deal you want to write about, but it would be wise to narrow down what you want to address to perhaps just three or four or perhaps five key aspects, depending upon the amount of depth in which you go into each.

n
These aspects could include: particular areas of the exhibition; or specific artefacts (such as books, or documents, or video testimony, or historical film footage, or items of clothing); or the general layout and design of the exhibition, or the choices of aspects upon which the designers of the exhibition have chosen to focus.

n
The following questions could be helpful to bear in mind while writing your reflection:

n
What do you feel were the positive and negative aspects of the exhibition?

n
Did it contribute to class-based learning?

n
Was the content of the exhibition sufficient and convincing?

n
Did the exhibition inform your reading about and understanding of the topic, and if so, how?

n
Has the exhibition furthered your knowledge of the topic to which it is related?

n
What improvements would you suggest to the exhibition?

n
You should aim to conclude with a critique or evaluation of the exhibition based on your observations and analysis.  As you write about the strength or weakness of the exhibition you need to be explicit about your reasons for forming your views. In other words, you need to show your reader evidence that influenced you to reach your conclusions
