Most scholars of US-Latin American relations have pointed to the hegemonic role of the United States in the hemisphere, particularly since the start of the 20th Century. They have alluded to Latin America’s limited agency or autonomy in shaping the regional international system, much less the global arena. However, since the end of the Cold War, there are discernible trends that show that at least some countries have acquired quite a bit of agency in pushing back on the US and acting with greater autonomy in hemispheric and global affairs.
